In response to extreme flooding, Dubai has unveiled a $8 billion plan to build a comprehensive stormwater runoff system. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Dubai’s ruler, announced the project on the social media platform X, stating that construction would commence immediately and is expected to be completed by 2033.
This announcement follows severe flooding two months ago that immobilized the city and exposed the shortcomings in its existing rainwater drainage infrastructure.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the project’s scale and significance, stating, “This network will cover all areas of Dubai and will absorb more than 20 million cubic meters of water per day.”
Designed to increase Dubai’s rainwater drainage capacity by an impressive 700%, the new system aims to enhance the emirate’s preparedness for future climate-related challenges.
Sheikh Mohammed highlighted it as the largest such network in the region, underscoring its crucial role in protecting the city’s infrastructure and residents.
