Axpo and SGV plan hydrogen passenger vessel on Lake Lucerne

Axpo has invested in H2Uri, a company based in Bürglen, central Switzerland. The Lake Lucerne Navigation Company will power a passenger vessel on nearby Lake Lucerne with hydrogen produced in the region.

In addition to Axpo and SGV, the project also includes EWA-energieUri and AVIA Schätzle.

Axpo continues to actively promote the development of the hydrogen economy in Switzerland, with the country’s largest green hydrogen plant, the Reichenau hydropower plant in Domat/Ems, nearing completion.

Another plant is planned for Bürglen in the Swiss canton of Uri, with hydrogen production expected to begin in 2025. Among other advantages, the plant’s output will be used to power the first hydrogen passenger ship on Lake Lucerne.

Shiptec AG, a Swiss shipbuilder and pioneer in hydrogen mobility on inland waterways, is in charge of the vessel’s planning, authorization, and conversion.

SGV Managing Director Stefan Schulthess stated, “The conversion of the MS Saphir to a hydrogen fuel cell system will be completed by autumn 2025. This will help us reduce CO2 emissions.” The Federal Office of Transport (FOT) in Switzerland is supporting the project.
