Solar panels will be positioned at eight locations within Yorkshire Water’s area. After installation, these panels will aid Yorkshire Water in achieving its carbon net zero goals. These sites represent the initial stage of solar panel installations at 28 locations across Yorkshire.
The installation of solar panels will take place at the following eight locations:
1-Harrogate North wastewater treatment works
2-Harrogate South wastewater treatment works
3-Staveley wastewater treatment works
4-Aldwarke wastewater treatment works, Rotherham
5-Belle Vue sewage pumping station, Doncaster
6-Old Whittington wastewater treatment works, Chesterfield
7-Filey wastewater treatment works
8-Bridlington wastewater treatment works.
The sites are scheduled to start producing renewable electricity in the summer of 2024 after completing preparatory work, installing, and commissioning.
According to Daniel Oxley, commercial manager at Yorkshire Water, “This initiative is a significant stride toward achieving our goal of carbon neutrality by 2030. Several of our operational sites have extra land as a result of changes in our treatment processes. By installing solar panels in these areas, we can make good use of the land and generate electricity for our sites. Once the initial installation of solar panels is finished at the 28 designated sites, it will meet 4% of our annual power requirements. Not only will the panels help boost our use of renewable energy, but they will also decrease our vulnerability to fluctuations in energy prices, providing a more stable foundation for a major operating cost, ultimately delivering better value for our customers.”
