Advanced Nitrogen Removal at VEAS Wastewater Treatment Plant, Oslo, Norway
Filtralite® Clean filter media, characterized by its unique porosity, promotes optimal biofilm development and efficient water flow, thereby improving the retention and removal of contaminants. The lightweight expanded clay structure enhances the contact surface area, enabling higher treatment capacity and contributing to lower operational costs.
With a capacity of approximately 600,000 and an annual treatment capacity of 100 million m³, VEAS is the largest wastewater treatment facility in Norway. Particularly for nitrogen compounds, it is subject to stringent discharge limitations into the Oslofjord.
The challenge
is to effectively remove nitrate and ammonia in order to comply with environmental regulations.
Solution-Filtralite® Clean
To aid biological filtration processes, Filtralite®, a porous lightweight expanded clay medium, was utilized:
Aerobic nitrification
Media: 2.5–5 mm Filtralite® Clean HC
Impact: Ammonia decreased from about 20 mg/L to less than 6 mg/L.
Anoxic denitrification
Media: 3–6 mm Filtralite® Clean HR
Impact: Nitrate dropped from about 15 mg/L to about 1 mg/L.
Note: Methanol was added as a source of carbon.
Results
- High nitrogen compound removal efficiency
- Operating for more than 25 years without replacing the media
- Lower operating costs and more filtration capacity
The special porosity of expanded clay enables the bio-filters to host bacteria and act as a physical filter simultaneously.
