ACCIONA is awarded operation and maintenance of middle Jarama basin wastewater treatment plants.

ACCIONA has been awarded the contract for the operation and maintenance of a cluster of wastewater treatment plants located in the middle basin of the Jarama River, within the Community of Madrid.

The contract, secured through a tender issued by Canal de Isabel II, will take effect on June 1st and span a five-year duration, with a budget of €24.5 million.

The scope of work includes the maintenance of seven wastewater treatment facilities: Algete II, Arroyo Quiñones, Cobeña, La Poveda, San Agustín de Guadalix, Velilla de San Antonio, and Torrejón. ACCIONA has operated the first six plants for the past five years.

Collectively, these seven treatment plants have the capacity to serve an equivalent population of one million, with an annual water volume of more than 21 million cubic meters.

Notably, the Torrejón WWTP, constructed by ACCIONA in 2009, is the largest in the group, with a capacity of over 8.5 million cubic meters, serving an equivalent population of 450,000.

This plant features advanced biological treatment with activated sludge, nutrient elimination, and a biogas cogeneration system for anaerobic digestion, enabling the recovery of 35% of the active energy consumed.

Additionally, several of the plants, such as Arroyo Quiñones, Algete II, Velilla de San Antonio, La Poveda, and Agustín de Guadalix, are equipped with the latest systems for continuous monitoring and control of key parameters in the nutrient removal process.

As part of this contract, ACCIONA will utilize a fleet of seventeen 100% electric vehicles and a tanker truck for sludge management. The company will also implement remote control systems in three of the facilities to enhance the quality of service.

This new contract further consolidates and expands ACCIONA’s presence in wastewater treatment within the Community of Madrid.

The company currently operates several flagship plants, including the Culebro Cuenca Baja WWTP and the Culebro Cuenca Media Alta WWTP, with a combined treatment capacity sufficient to serve an equivalent population of four million.
