Leading The Way in Industrial Air Treatment in Ełk, Poland

With its unique porosity, Filtralite® Air Filter Material is conducive to biofilm growth and allows air to flow through the filter bed in order to retain and adsorb more odours. This feature allows for larger volumes of air to be filtered through the same volume as contact area is increased.

Project Background

In 2017, EnergoUtil, an industrial facility in the town of Ełk, Poland, faced ongoing issues with its biological air filters. The facility had been using a traditional filter media mix of compost and bark chips, which degraded rapidly. This led to frequent blockages, poor airflow, increased pressure drop, and ultimately a need for frequent media replacement. A more robust and durable solution was required.

Solution: Upgrading with Filtralite® Air

To address these challenges, the company upgraded its biofilters using:

  • 400 m³ of Filtralite® Air 10–20 as the primary media, filling around 50% of the filter volume.
  • A top layer of birch bark chips was added to complement the filtration process.
  • The media is irrigated with process water three times daily, for 20 minutes per cycle, ensuring optimal humidity to support biofilm development and maintain odor removal efficiency.

Results & Operational Benefits

The switch to Filtralite® Air delivered immediate and long-term benefits:

  • Stable airflow and no clogging issues as experienced with the previous organic media.
  • Consistent odor removal performance, meeting regulatory and operational targets.
  • Significantly extended media life, reducing maintenance and replacement costs.
  • Smooth integration into existing filter systems with minimal structural changes.

The mixture of a composted material and bark chips previously used as a media did not meet our expectations. Thanks to the advantages of Filtralite® Air expanded clay, we have achieved stable operation of our biofilters.
