Effective Nitrate Reduction at Wierzchowisko: A Polish DWTP Case Study

Filtralite® Pure is made from lightweight expanded clay with a uniquely porous structure that optimizes water flow through the filter bed. This design increases the contact surface area, enabling more efficient contaminant retention and allowing greater volumes of water to be treated within the same footprint.

The Challenge

Traditional treatment processes struggled to meet low phosphorus discharge limits (<0.5 mg/L). The plant required a robust polishing step that could integrate seamlessly into the existing setup—without high operating costs or complex retrofitting.

The Solution

Installation of two Filtralite® Nature filter beds, filled with fine-grained expanded clay media. This innovative filter material offers:

  • Large specific surface area for enhanced phosphorus adsorption

  • High retention capacity even under varying loading conditions

  • Long-lasting performance with minimal maintenance

  • Simple integration into existing treatment infrastructure

Results and Performance:

  • Phosphorus concentration reduced to <0.2 mg/L in treated effluent

  • Stable operation over time, even during peak loads

  • Lower operational costs compared to chemical treatments

  • Environmentally friendly and easy to handle

During 12 years of operation, we have achieved great results with this nitrate removal technology. We run a stable process in biofilters with Filtralite. This technology does its job well.
