In an effort to encourage communities around the world to adopt and promote solutions, World Environment Day this year joins the UN Environment Programme’s BeatPlasticPollution initiative.
Because plastics are used in agricultural products, an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic trash leak into aquatic ecosystems annually, and microplastics build up in soil from sewage and landfills. Between $300 billion to $600 billion is the annual cost of plastic pollution to society and the environment.
Although plastic pollution is a serious issue, there are clear solutions available, making it one of the most manageable environmental problems of our day.
World Environment Day will raise awareness of the mounting scientific data on the negative effects of plastic pollution and encourage people to recycle, reuse, reduce, and boycott plastics. Additionally, it will strengthen the worldwide pledge made in 2022 to implement a global plastic pollution treaty in order to eradicate plastic pollution.
