Filtralite® Pure Outperforms Traditional Media in Thames Water’s Filter Upgrade
Filtralite® Pure filter media stands out with its uniquely porous structure, designed to optimize water flow and maximize contaminant retention. Thanks to its lightweight expanded clay composition, this innovative media increases the contact surface within the filter bed — enabling higher filtration volumes without the need for additional space.
Thames Water Enhances Filter Performance and Cuts Costs with Filtralite® Pure Mono-Multi
Facing increasing challenges due to climate change and seasonal algal blooms, Thames Water’s traditional fast sand filters were under severe pressure. Rather than investing in costly infrastructure expansion, the company launched an in-house research initiative to find a more efficient filter medium.
Over a dozen materials were tested, including sand, crushed glass, sand/anthracite mixtures, and Filtralite® Pure Mono-Multi. The trials revealed that Filtralite® offered superior performance thanks to its uniquely porous structure, which allows for better particle capture, reduced head loss, and longer filtration cycles — all while minimizing the need for backwashing.
As a result, 37 rapid sand filters were successfully upgraded using Filtralite® Pure Mono-Multi, increasing capacity without expanding the plant footprint. This innovative solution has helped Thames Water save millions in capital investments and operational costs, while improving energy and water efficiency — confirming Filtralite® Pure Mono-Multi as the smart choice for sustainable water treatment.
With new filter materials, and especially Filtralite® Pure Mono Multi, we have increased the capacity of our water works without having to increase the actual footprint. Our research has been profitable.
