The Australian and New South Wales governments are joining forces to invest $41.1 million in initiatives aimed at enhancing essential water quality and supply in regional communities of New South Wales, including Yass.
For Yass, both governments will allocate $18.1 million each to upgrade existing facilities and build new water treatment infrastructure, addressing a long-standing concern regarding drinking water quality in the area.
A 2024 survey by the Yass Valley Council revealed that 85% of residents avoid tap water and look for alternative sources.
“Every Australian, regardless of their location, deserves access to safe and dependable water,” stated Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment and Water. “Yass is just an hour from Canberra, yet residents frequently face boil water alerts due to water quality problems. This situation is unacceptable, which is why we are taking action. The new water treatment plant will significantly benefit Yass.”
This initiative aims to enhance town water supplies, elevate water quality, and create additional regional development prospects.
“Everyone should have access to clean and safe drinking water whenever they turn on the tap,” remarked Rose Jackson, NSW Minister for Water. “The NSW Government is delivering on our election promise to improve and safeguard drinking water quality for Yass residents.”
In Cobar, an extra $3.5 million from the Australian Government will be dedicated to reevaluating the previously co-funded first stage of the Nyngan to Cobar construction project. This initiative will ensure long-term reliability and security of water supply for the Cobar community while replacing two malfunctioning pump stations.
Additionally, in Bathurst, $1.4 million will be allocated (with contributions of $700,000 from the Australian Government, $350,000 from the NSW Government, and $350,000 from Bathurst Regional Council) to develop a comprehensive business case aimed at addressing the discrepancy between the current water supply and the needs of the Bathurst population.
This business case will explore opportunities for utilizing various water sources to ensure a dependable water supply for the community.
“We are dedicated to enhancing water security for regional areas across the state. This funding will guarantee that Yass, Bathurst, and Cobar have the necessary infrastructure to provide reliable water quality and supply, even amid challenging climate conditions,” Jackson stated.
The Australian and New South Wales governments are committed to collaborating on responsible investments in water infrastructure, grounded in scientific evidence and economically and environmentally sound business cases.
