Va Tech Wabag has secured a contract worth €78 million ($82 million) from the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) for the construction of wastewater treatment facilities in Zambia.
This project is financially supported by the European Investment Bank and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau.
The agreement follows a design, build, and operate (DBO) model, which includes the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of two advanced wastewater treatment plants located in Ngwerere and Chunga. These facilities will be capable of treating 54 megalitres (MLD) and 19 MLD of wastewater daily, respectively. The EPC phase is expected to last 36 months, after which Wabag will oversee the operation and maintenance of the plants for an additional 24 months.
To promote sustainability, Wabag intends to utilize renewable energy sources, such as biogas and solar power, for part of the plants’ operations.
This initiative reflects Wabag’s ongoing commitment to providing innovative water solutions across Africa. Guhan Kandasamy, Wabag’s Head of Sales and Marketing (Africa), expressed gratitude to LWSC for their trust in Wabag to execute one of Zambia’s most significant sanitation projects in recent years. He emphasized Wabag’s pride in contributing to the Zambian government’s efforts to improve water and sanitation infrastructure, thereby benefiting many lives.
