The United Arab Emirates has authorized a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the nation’s water infrastructure. These projects are intended to bolster the UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036 by increasing the capacity of essential water facilities.
Plans include the construction of nine new dams, the expansion of two existing ones, and the installation of multiple embankment barriers. The primary objective is to improve resilience against climate change effects and increase water reserves by capturing rainwater and floodwaters, with a total storage capacity of up to 8 million cubic meters.
Furthermore, the plan encompasses the creation of nine water canals, which will cover about 9 kilometers in length. These canals are designed to regulate water flow and reduce flooding risks in certain residential areas. The entire project is expected to be completed within 19 months.
The initiatives will be implemented across 13 residential regions, including Shis and Khor Fakkan in Sharjah, Masfout in Ajman, Sha’am and Al Fahleen in Ras Al Khaimah, as well as Mohamed bin Zayed City. Other involved locations are Hail, Qidfa, Murbeh, Dadna, Al Seeji, and Ghazimri, all situated in the Emirate of Fujairah.
