TPG Telecom has secured a significant 10-year agreement for the largest smart water metering initiative in Australia, partnering with South East Water.
According to a statement from the telecommunications firm, this project will entail the installation and management of one million narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) smart meters across Victoria, representing a major advancement in the region’s water management strategies.
This project is being recognized as a transformative development for the industry, as it will replace conventional mechanical water meters with state-of-the-art NB-IoT digital meters.
These devices will be installed throughout South East Water’s extensive 27,000 km pipeline network, which caters to 1.7 million customers from Port Melbourne to Portsea and extends towards Gippsland.
The advantages of this digital upgrade are extensive. The new meters are projected to save approximately five billion liters of water each year by enhancing network efficiency and improving leak detection capabilities.
Customers will receive daily updates regarding their water usage, enabling them to track consumption trends, detect leaks, and make informed choices to conserve water and lower expenses.
Mark Elvins, Acting General Manager Digital Utility at South East Water, underscored the significance of this collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled about our partnership with TPG Telecom and the cost savings and sustainable advantages that digital meters will provide to our customers, community, and the environment.”
He further noted, “Looking ahead, we must enhance the resilience of Australia’s water infrastructure to tackle the challenges posed by water scarcity, climate change, and population growth, and with TPG Telecom, we can achieve this.”
Chris Russo, TPG Telecom’s General Manager for Enterprise & Government Customer Sales & Solutions, emphasized the importance of the rollout, stating, “This major rollout exemplifies our dedication to innovation and exceptional customer service, equipping South East Water with the insights and capabilities necessary to manage water usage more effectively for its customers and the environment.”
