Orlen Wind 3, part of the Orlen Group, has reached a preliminary agreement with EDP Renewables Polska to acquire wind and solar energy assets in Poland.
This agreement encompasses photovoltaic (PV) projects with a total capacity of 280 megawatts peak (MWp) and a 26MW wind farm.
The deal, valued at 1.15 billion zlotys ($292 million), stands out due to its significance in the Polish renewable energy landscape.
Upon finalization, this acquisition will boost Orlen’s renewable energy generation capacity by 30%.
The contract includes two solar PV farms.
The first, located in Chotków, covers 45 hectares and features 61,000 solar panels, yielding a total capacity of 40MWp. Commissioned in January 2024, this farm is designed to minimize environmental impact and includes fencing that allows small animals to move freely.
The second PV farm, currently being expanded, has an existing capacity of 200MWp with plans to add another 40MWp. Situated on a former lignite strip mine in Przykona, this facility is expected to become Poland’s largest solar PV farm once the expansion is completed by year-end.
In addition to the solar assets, the Orlen Group will also take over the Warta wind farm.
Built in May 2023 near Sieradz in the Łódź Province, this wind farm consists of 13 turbines with a total generation capacity of 26MW. The site benefits from strong wind conditions, ensuring efficient turbine operation.
Ireneusz Fąfara, president and CEO of Orlen’s management board, remarked: “We committed to accelerating our initiatives, and we are fulfilling that commitment. This new agreement will contribute over 300MW to our renewable energy portfolio, which is nearly a third of our recent renewable developments.
“However, this deal is not solely about scale; it also presents significant economic advantages and provides a genuine opportunity to enhance the value of the Orlen Group.
“Our aim is to be a major player in the energy transition across Central and Eastern Europe. Therefore, we are not halting our efforts and are actively pursuing additional promising projects in the renewable energy sector to capitalize on every business opportunity that arises.”
