Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has revealed that nine developers from various nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, China, South Korea, and Japan, have been prequalified to submit bids for the Sitra Independent Water and Power Plant (IWPP) project.
This initiative seeks to enhance Bahrain’s water and power infrastructure. The proposed facility is set to have a power generation capability of 1,200 megawatts (MW) and a seawater desalination capacity of 30 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD).
The announcement, made on December 26, 2024, follows a prequalification invitation issued on November 10, 2024. The prequalified companies include:
– Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company
– Gulf Investment Corporation
– China Machinery Engineering Corporation
– Korea Electric Power Corporation
– ACWA Power
– JERA Middle East and Africa Management Co
– Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA)
– Alghanim International General Trading and Contracting Co. – Foreign Branch
– Sumitomo Corporation
These nine companies will participate in an international tender process to design, develop, and manage the integrated power and water facility. The project will adopt a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) model, promoting private-sector participation in Bahrain’s utilities sector.
EWA aims to finalize and award the contract in the first quarter of 2025.
