Element Six and Lummus Technology Announce Global Partnership for PFAS Destruction.

Element Six (E6), a leader in the development and production of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond solutions, has partnered exclusively with Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technologies and energy solutions, to tackle the global issue of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) destruction.

“Addressing the destruction and elimination of PFAS in water is a significant global challenge that both Lummus and Element Six are committed to tackling,” stated Leon de Bruyn, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lummus Technology.

“By merging our technologies, we are strategically positioned to deliver efficient, scalable, and effective methods for destroying these chemicals, thereby protecting public health and the environment for future generations.”

PFAS refers to a broad category of synthetic fluorinated organic compounds that have been manufactured and widely utilized in industrial processes and consumer goods since the 1930s.

Often called ‘forever chemicals,’ PFAS do not naturally decompose in the environment and can lead to serious health issues with high exposure, such as cancer, reduced immunity, and infertility. As a result, regulatory agencies globally, including in the U.S., UK, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East, are implementing measures to control these compounds in drinking water and consumer products.

“There are numerous facets of our daily lives that will benefit from the groundbreaking technology resulting from this partnership,” remarked Siobhán Duffy, CEO of Element Six.

“From enhancing our environment to protecting our health, this diamond-based electrochemical solution will tackle the urgent global issue of PFAS, paving the way for a better future for all. I want to commend the Element Six and Lummus teams for their relentless efforts over the past decade to overcome many technical challenges and deliver this exceptional technology.”

This collaboration integrates Element Six’s patented boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrochemical oxidation technology with Lummus’ patented electro-oxidation technology and system integration for water and wastewater treatment.

The combined technologies have been tested using free-standing BDD electrodes, achieving successful destruction of both long and short-chain PFAS. Free-standing BDD electrodes, unlike metal electrodes plated with BDD, facilitate the high current densities necessary to eliminate short-chain PFAS.

Lummus and Element Six are already advancing with customers to explore various real-world applications utilizing this innovative BDD electrochemical oxidation technology.
