AECOM joint venture to provide engineering services for Metro Vancouver’s Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade.

Metro Vancouver has selected a joint venture between AECOM and Jacobs Consultancy Canada to deliver preliminary engineering services for the upgrade of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. This initiative aims to modernize the facility to comply with regulatory requirements, ensure public health safety, and protect the environment in a rapidly developing area.

“As Metro Vancouver continues its investments in water treatment facilities, we are prepared to assist as the leading firm in water design,” stated Beverley Stinson, CEO of AECOM’s global Water division. “In line with global trends emphasizing sustainable and resilient infrastructure and addressing global water supply issues, our team is eager to leverage our expertise in advanced water treatment technologies for the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, ensuring it adheres to the highest environmental standards and fosters regional sustainability.”

The project is designed to enhance the facility to meet regulatory standards, protect public health, and safeguard the environment in a fast-growing region. Established in 1963, the Iona Island plant currently serves around 750,000 residents, processing approximately 200 billion liters of wastewater annually.

The upcoming upgrades are intended to improve water quality, support the region’s carbon neutrality objectives, and bolster resilience against climate change. The joint venture will undertake preliminary engineering activities, including design and project planning, aimed at delivering considerable environmental and operational advantages while minimizing the ecological impact of the project.

“We are honored to act as a reliable partner in this essential upgrade, which builds on several recent water and wastewater treatment initiatives our teams are executing for Metro Vancouver,” remarked Richard Barrett, CEO of AECOM’s Canadian operations. “Our comprehensive understanding of the region’s specific environmental challenges, along with our local project experience, will be vital in enhancing Metro Vancouver’s wastewater treatment capabilities and preserving the natural environment.”

AECOM’s partnership with Metro Vancouver includes several prominent water infrastructure projects, such as the Stoney Creek Trunk Sewer Upgrade and the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant.
