ACCIONA has secured two new contracts in Portugal for the tertiary treatment of water from the Vilamoura wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in the Algarve and the Carvalhal WWTP in Mafra, a town in the Lisbon District.
The Vilamoura WWTP’s tertiary treatment, awarded by Águas do Algarve in collaboration with the local firm Tecnorém, will generate high-quality water from reclaimed wastewater for irrigating golf courses. This process will utilize ultrafiltration technology, capable of handling 1,000 m³/h. The facility is anticipated to be operational by mid-2026.
Conversely, the contract for the Carvalhal WWTP has been granted by Águas do Tejo Atlântico. This WWTP will implement activated sludge technology, designed to treat 356 m³/h. This contract marks the introduction of wastewater treatment to Carvalhal, promoting essential environmental measures to prevent pollution of the Lizandro River and protect the nearby tourist beach of Foz do Lizandro.
The total value of these contracts amounts to €6 million, with a combined treatment capacity of 1,356 m³/h.
Proven Expertise in Portugal’s Infrastructure
ACCIONA has been involved in over 70 infrastructure projects across Portugal, one of its initial international markets. Notable projects include the Oriente Station in Lisbon, the Infante Don Henrique Bridge connecting Vila Nova de Gaia and Oporto, the Olhão marina within the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the Algarve, and the Alqueva dam on the Guadiana River in the Alentejo region.
In the water sector, the company has constructed more than 30 treatment plants for both wastewater and drinking water. Among these, the Alcantarilha water purification plant is significant, providing drinking water to the Algarve region with a maximum production capacity of around 260,000 m³/day. The Sul-Ilhavo WWTP in Aveiro also has a capacity of nearly 39,300 m³/day.
Other prominent projects include the Faro-Olhão WWTP, located two kilometers east of Faro, which has a capacity exceeding 28,000 m³/day; the Companheira WWTP in Portimão, Algarve, capable of treating over 32,000 m³/day; and the Ermidas do Sado WWTP, which will serve 4,100 residents in the Setúbal district, situated in the central-southern part of the country.
