ACCIONA has been selected to design and construct a reverse osmosis desalination facility in Doha, Qatar. This plant will have the capacity to produce 500 million liters of water daily, sufficient to provide drinking water for 2 million people, with a budget of approximately US$500 million (€475 million).
The scope of ACCIONA’s project includes the engineering, construction, and commissioning of the plant for its client, Samsung. This initiative is part of a significant water and energy project in Qatar, spearheaded by the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation.
To ensure a reliable drinking water supply for its citizens, Qatar has adopted reverse osmosis desalination as a crucial strategy. Since 2016, these plants have been vital to the country’s water infrastructure, and ACCIONA has been at the forefront of this technological advancement.
The Ras Abu Fontas 3 plant marked the first significant use of reverse osmosis technology in Qatar’s desalination efforts, capable of producing 165,000 m³ of water daily to serve over 1.1 million people.
Additionally, ACCIONA has constructed the Umm Al Houl 1 and 2 desalination plants in Doha, each with a production capacity of 284,000 m³ per day, collectively supplying water to 2.5 million individuals.
ACCIONA opened its first office in the Middle East in 2008 in Dubai and later established offices in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, where it has undertaken numerous infrastructure projects, particularly in the desalination sector.
